![]() In many occasions, observation is the only way to study a phenomenon without misrepresenting it. These instruments are progressively affirming and represent useful tools translating into specific sport-linked information, allowing to a better and relevant perception of the events occurring during a sports’ game. In the sports’ field, the most effective and objective instruments to collect relevant sports data relies on observation and on play analysis. To achieve this aim, the analysis of the games has assumed a transcendental role in sports. The identification of successful sports’ patterns has been addressed through the analysis of different play situations and different involved variables. Public expressions of behavior and unidentified observations do not have the same requirements.Sport success has gained media and research attention lately and sports performance key elements have been put under the microscope: we are assisting to a massive proliferation of research works aiming to understand the variables that define certain performance aspects impacting positively on sport success achievement. If you intend to make individual and identified reference to a person’s behavior, you must inform the participant and that person must freely choose to participate.Audio and visual recorders or cameras can be used to aid with capturing raw data. The collection of detailed field notes is key to successful non-participant observation. It is important that the researcher build trust and develop empathy with participants, whilst simultaneously making sure to avoid over-empathising with participants. ![]() Non-participant observation can be overt or covert. The researcher adopts a more separate and distant role than that of the Participant Observer. ![]() Researcher lives in or regularly visits the site/suburb/organisation.Ethical concerns: Should the researcher's voice be viewed with greater authority than that of the participants? This can be addressed by drawing on participant accounts, as well as that of the researcher. This can be addressed by observing as many different circumstances as is possible, over as long a period of time as is possible. Selectivity: The observation can never capture everything. The objectivity of the observer: The researcher can take steps to ensure systematic and rigorous approaches to sampling, field notes, and data collection to increase transparency. ![]() This may reduce over a longer period of observation, but remains a potential issue. ![]()
